Demolition Update #23 - MTS Centre

MTS Centre Press Release

The removal of materials from the demolition of the former Eaton’s store will continue over the weekend as the demolition contractor, McColman and Sons, continues the push toward completely clearing the area.

Subterranean Limited of Winnipeg have started the further excavation of the site to a depth six feet below the level of the old Eaton’s basement. The firm is also doing shoring work at the Donald Street and Graham Avenue corner of the project to ensure that there is no damage to the surrounding city streets during construction.

On Friday morning PCL Constructors Canada Inc., the project construction managers, delivered several truckloads of red bricks from the Eaton’s façade to Habitat For Humanity. The much-in-demand mementos will be cleaned and, in about two weeks time, displayed at the Habitat Re-Store, 75 Archibald Street in St. Boniface.

Habitat plans to affix a metal plaque to authenticate the origin of each brick and sell these souvenirs of the former Eaton’s building to raise funds for their house building and renovating projects in the community.
