The removal of materials from the demolition of the former Eaton’s store continued on schedule this week. Steel and other metals and clean concrete are being sorted from the rubble that was created as the structure came down.
The coldest week of the winter did not hamper the pace of the demolition project although extra care and time is being spent to keep the massive excavation equipment warm, well maintained and in good repair.
McColman and Sons Demolition Limited uses 15-ton trucks to haul the various materials away from the site. Materials being salvaged are taken to a variety of recyclers. The demolition company contracted for the remaining rubble to be carted to the BFI landfill site at Rosser, Manitoba. More than two hundred forty truckloads (sixty of steel and one hundred and eighty of rubble) were taken away through Friday of this week.
The removal and preservation of the Tyndall stone window bay surround that True North plans to mount in the entertainment centre is finished and work continues on the preservation of the additional sections of the Tyndall stone facade of the building that the City of Winnipeg is putting into storage for future use in a downtown building project.
The demolition, which started in August 2002, is scheduled to finish early in February. The building project will begin even before the site is completely cleared with excavation below the level of the former store basement, the shoring of the streets around the site and the pouring of the first piles for the Sports and Entertainment Centre.
