The removal of the ceiling and walls surrounding three sides of what was once the fifth floor of the main Eaton’s department store was the focus of work during the last full week of demolition activity this year. The old structure has been reduced to approximately one-half of its former height. The removal of the building from the site is now about 55% complete.
The demolition project, which started the last week in August 2002, will resume the first week in January 2003 when the largest excavators on the site will begin to chew into and knock down the remaining floors of the old building. Crews and machines will be working from the ground up, rather than from the roof down, for the first time.
The demolition contractor, McColman and Sons Demolition, expects the process of leveling the remaining floors of the building to be complete in the middle of January 2003. The sorting of metal, steel, wood and rubble and the removal of all traces of the building will finish early in February.
The first signs of construction activity will be work on shoring of the streets around the excavation and the pouring of the first piles for the Sports and Entertainment Centre.
