The demolition workers dismantling the Eaton’s building enjoyed an early Christmas present of balmy temperatures and sunshine over the past week. This made functioning out in the elements easier and the project continued on schedule. The demolition project is now more than 50% complete.
The removal of the ceiling and walls surrounding three sides of what was once the sixth floor of the main Eaton’s store is now complete. The section of wall still standing above the sixth floor along the Portage Avenue front of the building will be taken down this weekend.
The sorting of wood, concrete, steel and non-ferrous metals to be salvaged is now continuous. The remainder of the material is reduced to rubble and taken to a landfill.
In the last full week of demolition activity before Christmas (December 16th to December 20th), the ceiling and walls surrounding the fifth floor along the Portage Avenue, Hargrave Street and Donald Street sides of the store will be razed.
When work resumes in January 2003, the largest excavators on the site will begin to knock down the remaining floors of the old building working from the ground up.
