Demolition Update #14 - MTS Centre

MTS Centre Press Release

On Monday, December 2nd the demolition of the ceiling and walls surrounding the sixth floor of the main Eaton’s store will begin, keeping the entire demolition project on schedule to be complete by January 15, 2003. The past week saw the removal of the remainder of the ceiling and walls of the seventh floor and large scale sorting of materials to be recycled for removal from the site.

McColman and Sons Demolition Ltd have decided to continue using this “top down” demolition methodology until work crews reach the fourth floor. It will disappear in mid December. Large excavators working from the ground up will then take the final four floors of the building down one bay at a time.

As reported last week, approximately one-third of the Eaton’s block (bounded by Hargrave, Portage, Donald and Graham) has now been cleared to street level. The open space created with the complete removal of “the Annex” provides an unobstructed area for demolition work crews to quickly sort reusable materials from the rubble being removed to landfill.

Fifteen trucks of rubble and eight 15-ton trailer trucks of metal and steel have been removed from the site to date
