Construction Update #21 - MTS Centre

MTS Centre Press Release

There are now just 255 days left until the opening of MTS Centre on (or right around) Monday, November 15, 2004. As work continues to finish the exterior walls and roof of Manitoba's new sports and entertainment centre, there is rising anticipation of the day construction will be complete and growing excitement around the rumours of which world class entertainers will the visit Winnipeg to play the first events in the facility. For now, there is still a lot of construction to finish in the just over eight calendar months left before that gala opening.

The two main work projects to close the building in are in sight of completion. There are just two steel trusses to raise into place to complete the main support structure for the roof. At the same time, work continues on installing the structural metal roof deck, which will eventually cover the 93,000 square feet of roof over the building. The south exterior wall along Graham is now totally insulated and work continues around the other three exterior walls. The infill steel and glazing support steel that outlines what will one day soon become the spectacular wave of glass along the Portage Avenue façade is largely in place. The structural steel that will form the rotunda at the Portage and Donald entrance is expected to arrive at the site in the next two weeks.

There are about two hundred construction workers on site at MTS Centre during the current phase of activity. This will rise to as many as 400 workers every day when the building envelope is complete and the drive to finish the interior of the facility begins to ramp up.
