Construction Update #9 - MTS Centre

MTS Centre Press Release

Another milestone in the construction of the future True North Entertainment Centre was reached today with the pouring of the first section of the main concourse floor. A large section of the concourse floor at ground level along the Donald Street side of the facility is now finished and in place.

Concrete work dominates the present list of site activities. More than six and a half million pounds of concrete, which is about 13% of the total concrete in the finished building, has now been poured in place. Most of it is in the foundation walls, the event floor slab and the floor of the 300-foot long tunnel from Carlton Street to the event level, the columns for the seating bowl, elevator shafts, stairwells - and now in the main concourse floor.

While most of the event floor has been poured, the floor for the ice surface will not be installed until much later in the project. The area of the future ice surface will remain gravel and serve as a working or “lay down” area for the pre-cast stadia that will form the seating bowl to be lifted into place from.

Lafarge Canada is supplying all of the poured and pre-cast concrete for the project. The concrete placing and finishing is being done by PCL Constructors Canada Limited. Cowin Steel Company of Winnipeg is the rebar (reinforcing steel) sub trade.

A large part of the foundation work will soon be complete with the installation of the final group of the 498 caissons and piles that will support the foundation of the facility. At this date, 201 of the 221 caissons have been drilled and poured and more than 150 of the 277 driven pre-cast concrete piles have been set into the ground.
